West Nile Virus

Counties throughout California are reporting infected animals weeks earlier than in 2004, which is partially attributable to already-infected mosquitoes leaving hibernation and the record-breaking rains.

Water is essential to the mosquito breeding process, so the best way to curb the mosquito population is to eliminate any sources of stagnant water. Common backyard sources that can easily be fixed include:

  • Clogged rain gutters
  • Neglected or out-of-order swimming pools, hot tubs, ponds, and fountains
  • Containers such as rain barrels, cans, buckets, jars, flower pots, etc.
  • Old tires
  • Anything that will hold water for more than seven days

Mosquito activity typically peaks between May and September. During these warmer months, residents are advised to:

  • Avoid activity at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Apply mosquito repellent containing the active ingredient DEET, picaridin or the oil of lemon eucalyptus when outside.
  • Wear protective clothing (loose, light colored, long sleeve shirts and pants)
